Ninety Days, Five Over-50s, One Very Honest Experiment

Diet content is written by the young, for the young. Scroll through any keto community and you'll find 28-year-olds with personal trainers discussing macros. Meanwhile, the over-50s — the group arguably with the most to gain — get a pat on the head and a recipe for cauliflower cheese.

So we did something different. We recruited five Brits aged 52 to 68, handed them a keto plan, a supply of exogenous ketone supplements, and a set of scales, and we followed them for 90 days. Here's what happened — including the parts that didn't go to plan.

Meet the Five

All five had baseline bloods taken, including HbA1c, and scored their daily energy out of ten.

The Numbers After 90 Days

The headline results, verified at day 90:

Where the Ketone Supplements Fitted In

We were clear with all five: exogenous ketones are a tool, not a shortcut. Dev and Ray used them in the first fortnight to blunt the keto flu — Ray called them 'the only reason I didn't jack it in by day nine'. Margaret used them before her weekly weigh-ins out of habit rather than need. Susan and Anne largely ignored them after week three, and both still saw results.

The honest takeaway? The supplements helped most at the start, when motivation was fragile and carb cravings were loudest. Nobody pretended they melted fat on their own.

The Wobbles That Nearly Ended It

This is the part most success stories leave out.

Margaret nearly quit in week six after a family birthday buffet. 'I had two sausage rolls and thought, well, that's it, ruined.' She didn't quit — she restarted the next morning, which turned out to be the single most important skill of the whole 90 days.

Ray's wobble was social: 'The lads at work gave me absolute pelters. Week four, I nearly caved just to shut them up.' He started bringing his own lunches and, eventually, converting one colleague.

Susan's obstacle was cost. She nearly abandoned keto over the price of 'fancy' keto products before realising eggs, cabbage and mince were doing most of the work.

Their Unvarnished Advice for Peers

We asked each participant what they'd tell a friend over 50 considering keto:

The Verdict

Ninety days isn't a lifetime, and five people isn't a clinical trial. But what this experiment showed is that age was far less of a barrier than habit. The over-50s didn't struggle because their metabolisms were slower — they struggled because they'd spent forty years building routines, and routines take time to unbend.

For those willing to ride out the wobbles, the rewards — better bloods, easier joints, steadier energy — looked, from where we stood, well worth the effort.
